A Guide To Professional Photographers
You will hear a lot about professional and amateur photographers on 'model websites'. And sometimes it's very difficult to tell who's who. That's why Sabotage Model Management has put together this guide. |
Anyone in any business who earns their full time living from their chosen activity can be described as 'a professional'. There are professional plumbers, professional accountants, professional builders, AND professional photographers. They pay tax and National Insurance and some are registered for VAT. |
Anyone who earns their living doing one activity but enjoys another activity in the evenings and at weekends - even if they take it very seriously - is 'an amateur'. |
Terms like 'part-time' or 'semi-professional' or 'semi-pro' are just a way of people trying to make themselves seem more important. People either do something as their job or they don't. |
Anyone who described themselves as a semi-pro builder would probably be called a 'cowboy' - and we all know the sort of reputation cowboys have. |
Photographers either earns a living taking photographs or they don't. |

Are all Professional Photographers the same ? No ... for example |
- some photographers specialise in taking pictures of Buildings (architectural) |
- some photographers specialise in taking pictures of Weddings (social) |
- some photographers specialise in taking pictures of School Kids (school) |
- some photographers specialise in taking pictures of Products (still-life) |
- some photographers specialise in taking pictures of Clothes (fashion) |
- some photographers specialise in taking pictures of The News (press) |
The photographers who take pictures of models are generally commercial photographers - but they might want to describe themselves as fashion, glamour, or beauty photographers. Either way, they shoot models every day and know how to get the best from a model. Their work is seen in the pages of magazines and on advertisements. |
Professionals who specialise in shooting one type of subject don't usually specialise in shooting another. For example, it's not usual for a wedding photographer to also specialise in shooting cars for advertisements |
Professional commercial photographers should be able to show you examples of their photographs from magazines they have worked for. They will almost certainly have their names next to their pictures or in the front of the magazine (this is called a By Line) |
If a photographer tells you he or she is a professional but can't show you by-lined published examples of their work - you might find they're not being 100% honest with you |
If you are in any doubt about a photographer - contact your model agency and ask them to check the photographer out. |
